Problems viewing the desktop on linux box

It's because you're running twm in the new desktop, rather than whatever
you're used to.  Try clicking the mouse on the new desktop.  You should find
you get a different drop down menu with each mouse button.  One of the menus
should have options to open an Xterm in the desktop.
