Hello everyone.

I'm posting by way of introduction and also to throw a question at you:
I haven't found an answer to this in the archives, but sincere apologies
if I haven't looked hard enough.

I use VNC between 2 macs, the server being a UMAX APUS 2000 603e/160,
and the viewer an iMac rev A G3/233. Both macs run MacOS 8.6. The
network between them is TCP/IP, 10-base-T ethernet.

MAKING A MAC 'HEADLESS'
+++++++++++++++++++++++

I only use my Umax machine (the VNC server) for writing CDs, and I would
like to do away with its screen. The idea behind using VNC is that I can
operate Toast (the CD compiling and writing software) from my iMac, and
save physical space by getting rid of the monitor. I therefore don't
need to use VNC for anything particularly complex, and I don't much care
if it doesn't run at lightning speed.

I have been trying out VNC for this purpose with ALPHA version 1.1, and
have managed to get the system roughly working how I want it to.

The next step is to keep it working when I take away the server
machine's monitor. I tried taking away the monitor and restarting, with
VNCserver set to run at startup. It did.

However, when I connect to the server using the VNCviewer, I get a very
small (icon-size) image of the screen in the main viewer window.

I think this is because the server's graphics card automatically sets
itself to run at whatever resolution and depth is demanded of it by the
monitor plugged in to it. Am I right? If so, is there any way of forcing
it to 'think' at a certain resolution, so VNC will work?

REQUEST
+++++++++++++++

Please may someone tell me where to find a copy of the beta-2 release of
VNC server and viewer? I downloaded beta-3 but seemed to run in to the
same kind of trouble as everyone else.

Yours,
