Dear Keith,
I have read with interest the exchanges concerning "btw" and the =
like,
and what definition applies to them. I was particularly impressed with =
your
having persisted to the correct conclusion. Truly "btw" does not fit =
the
definition of an acronym because the definition "tree" for acronym says =
that
it must form a "word" which you are correct in noting "radar" does. A =
word
is composed of "morphemes" and morphemes are meaningful groups of =
letters.
"btw" is not meaningful outside of context, and thus does not fit the
definition. I further think, and this is purely subjective, that an =
acronym
must also have the attribute of being pronounceable.
The answer, imho, is that btw, brb, rtfm, lol, roflol, imho and =
the
like are "shorthand", which is defined by Merriam Webster as: =
short=B7hand
(sh=F4rt"h=B2nd") n. 1. A system of rapid handwriting employing symbols =
to
represent words, phrases, and letters. 2. A system, a form, or an =
instance
of abbreviated or formulaic reference.
Hang in there!
