Connecting to VNC on Linux box using XDM

I've successfully set up a Linux box running XFree86, XDM and VNC Server
in that from another box on the network (Win 98) I can punch in the
address of the Linux box (192.168.254.10:1) and be presented with the
XDM login screen (this is without being prompted for the Linux box's VNC
password). I can also connect the Linux box to itself using 'svncviewer
localhost:1'.

What I'd like to do now is be able to access the Linux box from a web
browser, and be presented with the XDM login screen as I am in the
previous examples. When I type in the 'http://192.168.254.10:5801', all
I am getting is 'There was no response. The server could be down or is
not responding...' (this is from the same Win98 box I connected from
using the VNCviewer program above).

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
