I don't know how straightforward, but Jay is right: it's a VGA adapter,
used because a Mac wants to know the capabilities of the attached
monitor.  So 4 pins of the monitor interface are devoted to "monitor
sense code" lines.  (Search til.apple.com if you want the details.)  If
you don't have a Mac monitor, you have to dummy in something on those
lines to make your machine boot up, so a Mac/VGA adapter will either
fake a fixed sense code (usually for Apple 21" monitor) or a will be
switchable, to represent your monitor more accurately.  If you can just
get a 15-pin D-sub connector, you can solder your own.
