You need to put your window manager command in a particular file - i think
it's ~/.vnc/xstartup but I'm not sure, not having a working Xvnc in front
of me (my 486 just got a HD replacement and is rebuilding it's own
kernel...).  For example, adding:

fvwm &

to the file will allow the FVWM window manager to load.  Obviously if you
prefer a different WM, use a different command.

(i'm also pretty sure this should be an FAQ if it isn't already)
