NT VNC loses remote [warning: rant]

Calm down.... It's not that bad. You will usually get the same ip address,
even on an NT network. Our lease time is around 8 hours, and my IP address
hasn't changed in 6 months. In my experience, your IP won't change unless
you A) leave your machine off/unplugged from the network for at least the
lease period, B) change your network card (MAC addr changes), or C)
somebody modifies the DHCP server in some way.

Oh lovely, yet another reason not to use NT. My 486 used to be given DHCP
address(es), I don't remember turning it on in the small hours, but the
lease renewal time was always 4am and the expiration was about 5 or 6am -
this for around two months in a row, towards the beginning of which several
reboots were issued. Also, even if I unplugged any of my machines (not
just the 486) it gave the same address back to them, usually... Most of
the 'backbone' of our University network is based on Solaris or Linux, so I
have no reason to suspect the DHCP isn't handled by such a thing.
