Improper CDE shutdown

Another question which has been asked before, but no one ever posted an
answer I can find in the archive:  when logging out of a VNC session on my
HP by clicking "EXIT" on the CDE taskbar, I get a flashing activity light
and some processes exit, but Xvnc doesn't close down the way the real X
server does.  Is there a solution to this?  "kill"ing Xvnc works, but it
is a bit awkward.  (I think KDE and Linux behave the same way, but admit
to not having checked carefully.)
