Right you are.  In fact, I was using RH 6.0 upgraded from 5.2 initially
without any trouble.  When I got a new drive, I decided to reinstall it fresh,
at which point the problem started.  The new file was in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/Xmodmap on my box.
