Thank you for all your help.
I should have read the documentation that came with VNC (vnc-latest_doc.zip)
The problem I have was that the /tmp/.X11-pipe and .X11-unix were only
writeable for user and group. I changed them to chmod 777, VNC works fine
now.

Add the port(s) to /etc/services (or do you not have root priv?)

No, I was referring to server-side operations. Once the port(s) has/have
been set aside, it should bind just fine.
