Hi, is vnc installed as a service? I had simular problems, which were cured
by installing it as a service instead of a user process. My machine is SP5
and doesn't have the ras thing, so I can't help you there...

Subject: Killing DOS programs ??

Hi all;

A few days ago I reported my VNC Viewer shut down my WinVNC (and my
applications) for no apparent reason.

It happened again :-(

I spent some time reviewing the problem.
In brief, I have WinVNC server running on a remote NT4 (SP3) platform.
I dial in with my laptop (Win98) via RAS and undertake a successful session.
I then minimize VNC to my taskbar and go on with other things on my laptop.
When I return to the VNC session, it's gone !!!
I drove to the NT site and found that WinVNC had shutdown, with the system
sitting at the desktop.
Pressing the "Start" button on the Task Bar produced no results. I could
press it and it would depress, and press it again and it would release.

I reviewed the NT Task Manager by right clicking the Task Bar and found that
4 DOS applications, WinVNC and nddeagent.exe had shut down. The GUI portion
of my running application had also shutdown, but was still displayed in the
Task List. It also appears the modem had been disabled.

I also reviewed the Event Log and found that every time this happens, the
RAS connection has been terminated by "admin request" rather than "user
request".

I pressed Ctrl/Alt/Del, logged off then back on again.

I successfully warm booted WinVNC then tried to dial into the system, but
the modem would not answer, even though both rasman.exe and rassrv.exe were
still in the Task List.

The only solution seemed to be a cold boot which clears the problem
entirely.

This has happened to me four times, on a system which worked flawlessly for
weeks.

Can someone please suggest what I'm doing wrong ??

Regards
Mark Hill
