VNC and Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) are incompatible. ICS
comes with Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition, and is used to allow one
computer in a network to act as the internet server for all the other
computers in that network. Unfortunately, VNC will not function with ICS
enabled. However, ICS can be installed, but disabled, and VNC will
function properly.
Once ICS is installed, an icon can be added to the system tray of the ICS
host, by checking a box in the ICS properties. With that icon present in
the system tray, ICS can be enabled and disabled quickly. In my situation,
ICS is used infrequently, and thus can be manually enabled when it is
needed. At all other times, ICS is disabled, and VNC functions properly.
If anyone else determines why ICS breaks VNC, and develops a solution for
this problem, please let me know. However, without such a solution, I have
found that manually enabling and disabling ICS will work fine for my usage,
and presumably for some other people, too.
I just wanted to pass this on, in the hopes I can prevent anyone else from
wasting as much time as I did with this issue.
