Does VNC interact at all with native X servers?

Is there any dependency between Xvnc and XFree86 or MetroX, for instance? In
other words, would version changes in XFree86 (in my case, 3.3.1 to 3.3.5)
have any impact whatsoever on Xvnc?

Another way to put it, I suppose, is: Can I install and run Xvnc on a
machine that has no native X server installed on it at all (text-only
machine: i.e. with a monochrome monitor?)
