Running Cadence under VNC and colormaps

Hi guys,
I'm only sending this after trawling through the mailing archives and many
newsgroups for any information.
We use a semiconductor CAD tool called cadence running on Solaris. The old
version that we are using (don't know if more recent ones are different)
will only run with a PseudoColor visual class, which I start with -cc 3...
Now, I find VNC great for all other applications on a dialup connection
with the Windows95 viewer, but for some unknown reason as soon as cadence
starts a huge amount of traffic seems to be sent down the line, and even
moving xterms around the screen slows down. I've tried (I think) most
relevant options, 8-bit on the viewer, -bgr233 on the server, and 8-bit on
the server.
At work I have duplicated the problem running the UNIX vncviewer, on an
Xterminal. I can see my network activity light flashing madly, and all
apps become sluggish. However I found that by specifying -owncmap for the
viewer things get back to normal...
So, has anyone used Cadence? Why should -owncmap make a difference, and is
there such an option hidden under Windows.
I'm going to look at the zlib compression additions, but I don't think it
will solve my main problem...
Best regards,
