You could look into Zebedee:

which was posted to this list like last month, I believe.  I'm the only one
on this list who has reported trying it though (that I noticed) which I
found surprising since SSH is always being brought up...

It's a program to do port forwarding w/ compression and encryption, like
ssh but much simpler to set up (in fact, if you don't care about encryption
the setup is almost nil) and completely free (GPL'ed).  It was written with
VNC in mind.  He even provides a precompiled windoze exec.

It'd probably be cool if there was a mention of it in the FAQ and perhaps
alongside the SSH instructions on the VNC web pages.
