I have observed the session closing when logging on/off.

I haven't delved into how to prove this but I believe that at the Login
window the Video card is configured in a mode that was determined during
installation.
When you log in your preferences for Video Display are different to the
Login Window and hence due to this change Vnc disconnects.

I would suggest you try loggin in as another user on your computer and
set your colour depth to 256, logoff then establish a connection with
Vncviewer to this computer and login. Do you still see the session
closed?
