connecting using machine name

Paul,

If you are going to use DHCP (as most people do)
Then you need to set up a WINS server (easy)
Just add the WINS service from Control Pannel|Networks|Services on your
server
(may be wise to re-install the service pack at this stage)

Then tell all the clients where the WINS server is (in network properties
TCP/IP)

What does it do ? It keeps track of all Name to IP relations in a database
eithr by scanning the network using netbui or by machines talking to it
directly using the WINS lookup address that you have specified.

Any problems you can mail to me direct as this isn't really a VNC issue.

Regards,
Malcolm.

On NT 3.5 and 4 the DNS server isn't dynamic. The DHCP Server doesn't
update the DNS to reflect the adress change. All the DNS database is
static. There is some commercial products available that handle Dynamic
DNS protocol and Microsoft has announced a dynamic DNS server in Windows
2000

Thanks for the info. Assume for a minute that I know nothing. I
already have a DNS server running on an NT box for web activity. How do
I go about setting it up so that I can use the machine names especially
when we go to dynamic IP?
