Windows 9x resource problem on fast/slow connection mix

I was wondering if anyone else has noticed a problem when connecting to a
Windows 95 host.
In most cases, the viewer is running on a fast computer with a high speed
network connection and the host is running on a slower PC with a slower
33.6k or 56k PPP connection. After the initial connection is established
(you get past the password dialogue box), the resources on the slower
Windows 95 machine seem to go down quite fast until the system crashes or
WinVNC finishes sending it's initial screen to the viewer.
If the system didn't run out of resources before the initial screen was
sent to the viewer, the moment the transfer is completed, resources seem to
pop right back up and everything works fine. It is almost like there is a
recursive loop going on eating up more and more system resources and then
once the screen it displayed, all this memory is freed up as the recursions
exit themselves.
This does not happen when going between two high speed connections and
seems to be worse the slower the connection.
I have been able to get around the problems in some cases by enabling the
8-bit screen option but even this doesn't help in some cases or I forget to
check the box before connecting. Note that there doesn't seem to be any
such problem from the Viewer end of things.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
