Speed in Java applets

Hi all,

Any advice on how I can increase the speed and performance of the Java 
applets inside IE 5.0?

The remote control windows inside the browser takes forever to show the 
changes and in many cases it shows a messed up disktop without proper 
updates.

I am using the Java applets that comes with the last main downloaded version 
with all the default settings.

Help please...
