I quote from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ , which you probably read
(I hope):
VNC stands for Virtual Network Computing. It is, in essence, a remote
display system which allows you to view a computing 'desktop' environment
not only on the machine where it is running, but from anywhere on the
Internet and from a wide variety of machine architectures.
Now please specifiy what more you want to know?

> desktop only?
Hmm, yes I think so, until someone (and probably not it's creators) finds a
reason to use it for something else, and the time to program it. And even
then it'll probably not be integrated into the main VNC ditribution, since
"It is, in essence, a remote display system"...
If you are talking about certain features such as file transfer, see FAQ
Q53.
Q53 Could you do file transfer (e.g. by drag & drop) between the two ends?
It's certainly possible, but we aren't going to do it. File transfer seems
simple, but is actually rather complicated to do in a cross-platform way.

PS: Note to everyone talking about compressing the stream: while I was
readin this, I ran into FAQ Q55 Would things work better if you compressed
the stream? ...
