black screen with Win98 ?

I'm running VNC server (3.3.2) on Win98.  I am continually having a
problem with the display freezing up, and if I restart the client, all I
get is a black screen.  I have tried the native client and the java
client.  Restarting the VNC server fixes the problem for a while.
