     I should have rtfaq: the reason I started getting 'unable to bind 
     socket' errors was that the permissions on my /tmp/.X11-unix directory 
     had been changed; the problem was solved by making the directory 
     writable to all (as suggested in the FAQ: Why can I only run Xnvc as 
     root?).
     Sorry for the bandwidth.
