There are two ways to avoid this 'palette flash'.
1) Get rid of the palette, ie switch to >=64k colours or use an 8 bit
fixed palette ("truecolour") mode.
2) Use fewer colours.
-- An option for the viewer to reduce from 256 colours to 64 colours
would do this nicely. The connection to the server would still be
8 bit, it's just displayed as 6 bit to avoid bad false colouring.
This would be useful for BOTH windoze and X.
