Peter Reif postulates the following:
>Hey Charles <some snippage>
>spreading thousands of virii.
>Folks like you should be removed
>from the underground!
>Bless you!
Peter, I read your imaginary scene with interest. Of course this is the
Internet, where we all stand naked with our text. However, I can see
your point, in the solid world, if you're the five hundred pound gorilla
and I sneeze viruses all over you and you say "Bless you" I'll probably
feel like I got off pretty easy. If on the other hand, I'm the five
hundred pound gorilla and sneeze all over you, I guess you will probably
say "thank you."
But OK, point taken, I was probably too hasty with poor Rolf and should
have seen him as the hapless tool of dark forces, and not to sound like
Ron Reagan's press secretary but to put a spin on suggesting that Rolf
die slowly, really meant: may he die slowly and prosper.=20
AN OPINION:
Great list are noted for their lack of moderation, and diversity of
topics whether off subject or not. I'm glad to see this list is good
for that, even though there are a few worried about the straight and
narrow. I suspect those are people that do a lot of moderating somewhere
else, like home for instance, or at the agency.
A SUGGESTION:
All topics should be welcome within reason. Well.. you know, like chili
recipes or a lively off topic ramble over something currently hot in the
world, or like the eighty or so post to a Linux users list recently over
gun control, a constant topic of discussion in .com land.
Here's how you do it: place a universally accepted "thing" in front of
an off topic subject, like <OT> (off topic) followed by your subject.
This way we can have some entertainment along with the serious stuff and
the list will be richer for it. Another good thing about prefacing non
topic stuff and opinions various with <OT> is that constipated
subscribers like Roger Felts can set a watch filter on his e-mail client
that will automatically delete any post with the subject starting with
<OT> and while the rest of us enjoy a good yarn he can be on form and
topic.
