I agree that in most cases your statement is true.  However, in my case the
client is outside our corporate firewall and does not have access to the
domain controller. :<(  Any chance of "having it both ways" somehow?  (You
may recall my hack to allow a mail message to cause the server to initiate a
connection to a specified client through our firewall.)

BTW, since this patch only works for Windows->Windows connections anyway, it
would be much much much better to have the LogonUser thing done at the
client side, in the same way that it's done when mounting an SMB driver from
a different domain, in order that the password is transferred encrypted
where possible.
