No, not the font called 'misc'; the font _directory_ called 'misc' (which
should contain, in the text file fonts.alias, some entry like

fixed "-misc-fixed-medium-r-semicondensed--13-120-75-75-c-60-iso8859-1"

which defines the default font 'fixed'. If this is lacking, the server can't
start.

You can perhaps look in the various server font directories for a
'fonts.alias' file containing that line, and set your font path to only that
directory.

If I recall your original message correctly, though, you have a very strange
installation. An alterative might be to look at ftp://ftp.x.org, where
you'll find the unpacked X distribution, and fetch the font directories
(which will contain .bdf files and the fonts.* files in some form); your
OpenWindows bin directory should contain a program called 'bdftopcf' or
'bdftosnf' which can be used to convert the ASCII distribution format to a
binary format the server can understand. You then create the tree - 100dpi,
75dpi, misc, and any others - and fonts.dir and fonts.alias in those
directories.

Alternatively, if you can find a Sun system of the same flavour - Sparc or
Intel - which does have the correct font tree, you can copy it from there.

Don't ask for the fonts to be mailed, though - they are *HUGE*.
