I had similar problems with font stuff.

The only way I could get things to work was to use the font server.

There is some problem relating to compressed font files that goes
away when you use the font server.

There is an old FAQ available from the VNC web site that describes
this.

I was hesitant at first in trying this, but it turned out to be painless.
