When I understand the picture correctly your situation is like this:

HOME-PC --- Modem --- Modem --- Work PC --- LAN

Correct?

What is the link that is established between the two PCs (PPP/serial)?

Does your work PC have a default gateway setting that is pointing towards
the LAN?

Do other services work when connecting from home to work?
