I use vnc to connect to my pc at home once in a while. To
do this I have set it so that whenever a dialup networking
connection is started it will start vnc. The program I use
to do this, DynamIP, has an option to close programs after
the connection is closed. The problem I have is that when
vnc shuts down, and there is no network connection it will
start a dialup networking session, and start a continual loop.
I got around this by not having vnc close on disconnect. This
works until I need to shut down the machine, when it will again
start a dialup networking session before closing. Is there
another shutdown method that can be used to avoid this?
Someone asked recently about the CDE desktop on Solaris not exitting
correctly. I use CDE desktop on Digital Unix and have the
same problem. CDE does save the current config when you do this,
but does not exit. I suspect it stems from not starting the
session as root. (if you can start it as root, that would be a
nice test) (Also, starting it from dtlogin instead of Xsession
might help) If anyone has any suggestions they would be
appreciated. I love having a 16 bit display as a client with vnc
instead of the 8bit native display.
Finally if anyone has anything to say about keyboards, it might
help. I find that my backspace key works as if it were Del when
using vnc on DigitalUnix. I am slowly changing my habit from
backspace to backarrow-backspace, but this is a bit tedious.
Thanks, and as has been said before, vnc is a fantastic piece of
software. I have tried pcAnywhere, but like most software today,
it was far more than I needed. Simplicity is best.
