Newby Question - Socket Connect ???

I apologise in advance if this question has been raised before.

I am getting the following error with the vncserver for Linux running on
Slackware Linux kernel 2.0.27. In all other respects the machine is fine
- I have been running Linux on it for several years. I can telnet in and
out, ftp in and out, use it for nfs and samba, and have x-windows
working fine on it. 

I did initially have problems with the font path, but solved that (I
think) by un-commenting and correcting the lines referring to the font
path.

Any connection from another machine (Linux  with Netscape or the Linux
vnc viewer, or the dos viewer) results in a grey screen with the x
cursor, and nothing more.
