Screen updating

 VNC comes up, I'm connected, I popup a window, do whatever I need to do 
and tell the window to close.  It does on the machine console but not in 
the VNC screen.  If I slowly move the cursor around I get small squares of 
what should be there.
Q: is there a "refresh" command/button?
Q: do I have something set wrong
