Couldn't add screen ???

I'm having a problem getting the VNC server to run under my linux system.
I've tried the precompiled linux binaries from the VNC website as well as
the Debian packages with the same results:
When running the vncserver script, the server appears to have started,
however I can't make any connections to it. Should it be running in the
background? visable under 'ps' perhaps?

I then proceeded to run the binary manually but I receive this output:

rfbInitSockets: listening on TCP port 5900

Fatal server error:
Couldn't add screen

output from vncserver:

New 'X' desktop is globetech:1

Starting applications specified in /etc/X11/Xsession
Log file is /root/.vnc/X.log
