I am unsure if this is in fact what is happening, but it might be something
to look into:

under windows 95/98, one can install "themes", on aspect of themes are
color/animated cursors.  I am unsure how these are integrated into the
system, but the ladybug might be a theme cursor, and VNC is unable to deal
with the way themes hook themselves into the system.
