trouble porting Xvnc to Linux PPC

I've successfully built Xvnc on MkLinux (Linux 2.0.33 on a PowerPC) by
adding appropriate bits to Xvnc/config/cf/{linux, Imake}.cf, but the
display on a vncviewer is screwed up.  The colormap seems OK, but the
displayed pixels look like they're rotated by a bit or two, i.e., a
line of pixels that's supposed to look like this:

ABCDEFGH

instead looks something like this:

CDEFGHAB

And the viewer dies with "read failed" when I try to move a window.

Any suggestions?
