4bpp is 16 colours.  8bpp is 256 colours.  WinVNC will happily support 4,
8, 16, 24 and 32 bit displays.  The way it does 4 and 8 bit displays is by
getting Windows to translate those into 16 bit, to avoid the need for that
sort of code inside WinVNC.  The way it does 24 bit displays is by getting
Windows to translate those into 32 bit, to avoid byte packing
difficulties.  This isn't ideal but it simplifies the code a great deal.

What sort of errors are you experiencing?
