matlab 5 will not start ?

do you also have a font problem ??

if you dont .... we can at least rule out that it is a font problem .

this matlab problem is very strange... it may be a vnc problen since the
other servers you tried (and i also have used MI/X,goglobal,x-win32).

we need a real expert for this one...:{
