matlab 5 will not start ?

I have the exact same problem.  I use a Sun Ultra 1 with Solaris 2.5.
Matlab runs fine for me over MI/X and Exceed (to my NT).  But when I
type "matlab" at the xterm prompt in a vnc session, it just hangs and I
ctrl-C to stop it.

Again, other programs such as netscape and framemaker work.  

Hmmm....
