Unless Suse does something special, the latest version of VNC should support
compressed fonts.  3.3.1 didn't, and if you look in the old FAQ page
(http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/oldfaq.html) it covers 3.3.1 issues like this (and
suggests exactly the fixes you gave!)
