We are currently working on including zlib compression in the VNC protocol to
improve VNC performance over slower links.  However, as some of you have
pointed out, whether it improves performance depends on the speeds of the
machines involved as well as the link between them.

I believe there _is_ zlib compression included in the standard java package
java.util.zip
