There's no reason you can't run Linux and X on a '386 with a 40mb HD.
The only catch is you'll want 8 MB of RAM. (Such a machine, except
with a larger HD for Web files, is my main mail/WWW machine.) If you
use the SVGA viewer, you might be able to get by with 4MB.
