Hi Anil,

What seems to be going wrong here is that the X server can't find the
directories containing the fonts. The important error message is the bit that
says:

> failed to set default font path
> '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fon
> ts/Speedo/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75
> dpi/,/usr/X11R6/ lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/'

In other words there isn't a /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts directory. This is
probably because you don't have the XFree86-3.3.1-14 RPM. On our Redhat 5
machines we get:

  % rpm -qf /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
  XFree86-3.3.1-14

You'll have to get this package before you can run VNC.

Cheers

Tristan

The font path is not working with for me in vnc

I am trying to run a server on a RedHat Linux 5.0

I have all the fonts installed and a regular X server
run fine. (I can run more than one X server on
this machine with any problem)

running the given perl script the x apps it starts
(looking at ps aux) die after a few seconds, so I am
trying to run Xnvc directly

Well, I downloaded the win32 and linux clients today, but I couldn't get
either of the servers to run.

Running the win32 server setup gave me the setup window, followed by a
little window with an exclamation mark. I click on the button in that
window, and setup quits.

Running the linux server gives me the following errors in my X.log file:

Hello!

I think that vnc is a great idea. I have installed and played a little
with it on Linux 2.0.33/libc 5.4.44/XFree 3.3.1 system. Works OK. Few
problem/suggestions:

1) It looks like Xvnc doesn't support .pcf.gz fonts, only .Z compressed.
It's a pity for Linux users (one should recompress all zillion fonts) and
at least should be mentioned in docs.

2) Option -kill for vncserver script to gracefully shutdown previously
started server would be nice.

3) It looks like netscape doesn't close sockets properly when moving away
from the page with vnc client. This prevents restart of server with the
same display number.

4) Support for non-latin (say, cyrillic) keyboards is certainly broken,
but I didn't investigate this in details.

Regards,

      Vladimir Eltsov

Hi list,

I'm trying to run Xvnc on my Linux 2.0.33 machine, using
Xfree86 3.3.1. I'm using xdm, and I modified vncserver
to contain my installation path (/opt/vnc) and the font
and rgb paths (/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts etc).

I'm getting the following error messages:

Couldn't open RGB_DB '/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt'
rfbInitSockets: listening on TCP port 5901
httpInitSockets: listening on TCP port 5801
failed to set default font path
'/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/misc/,/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/75dpi/'
Fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
_X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

I checked all the files and fonts, and they are available,
and readable.

I don't understand why the server can't read rgb.txt, as
it's world readable, and I can access it from the shell I'm using
to run xncserver. As far as the fonts are concerned, could it
be that Xvnc doesn't grok gzipped font files?

BTW, I've no problems using my Windows desktop from Unix.
Most impressive, super product!

Quite a few people are having problems on Linux because the Xvnc server
doesn't currently understand compressed fonts as used by Xfree86.

There are various (mostly nice!) comments on
http://slashdot.org/slashdot.cgi?mode=article&artnum=786

and someone has written the following:

"Here's what I did to get the vncserver working with my compressed fonts.
First, I decompressed the fonts (gunzip *.pcf.gz in the fonts dirs) and then
in each font dir I ran mkfontdir to rebuild the fonts.dir file... After that
it worked like a charm! "

We haven't had a chance to test this yet...

You can use a font server to get around this. But yes the VNC font handlers
appear to be based on an older X font renderer. Since XFree 4.0 should
appear soonish I think I'll stick to a font server having tried building
X before a few times 8)

They detail problems some Linux users had with compressed fonts. This may be your problem.

I'm impressed. VNC satisfies a number of our immediate needs, even
though the current release is quite coarse.

Especially the accessability of the *clipboard* makes VNC much more
useful than for example Timbuktu Pro and NetOp (on NT 4.0).

I miss these features:

1) NT server should survive log-off
2) Ctrl+alt+del is not passed to the NT server (there should be an
extra button in the viewer(s) for this). This is required to
   unlock a locked NT workstation.

Of course, first of all, big kudos to ORL for releasing VNC.

Now for the begging..

What I'd like is to have an NT application server, running several
applications for different end-users on different (Linux) machines.

Any clues on how to do this (if at all possible) ?

I tried with 'VDESK', which is included in Microsoft's NT Server
Resource Kit (#2), but that wasn't satisfactory.

I installed VDESK, logged in as myself on the main desktop,
again as myself on desktop #2, and as Administrator on
desktop #3. So far, so good.

Then I started VNC on desktop #3 (as Administrator), set that
to VNC display '2', and accessed that from a Unix box.
I then tried to start a VNC on the main desktop, but that one
complained that there was already a VNC running. :(

However, VNC seems to work with VNC (I could switch desktops
through a vncviewer as long as they were owned by the same user), but
this doesn't seem a viable option for multiple concurrent users
  through VNC.

Ideas, anyone ?

Soggie.

The web pages explicitly state that what you want to do is not
supported, and they encourage capable programmers to take on the task of
extending VNC/Win32 in this respect. Maybe using VDESK (which I haven't
heard about before) is a good start...

*** Information relevant to users running WinVNC (Win32 VNC server) on
	Windows 95 systems:

At the time of release, there was a known bug in WinVNC 3.3.1 which had
not been tracked down. This bug caused Windows 95 machines to stop
sending updates to VNC clients after a few minutes of use.

The problem is thought to be related to rendering of the mouse pointer at
the server end. A patched version of WinVNC is currently available from
the VNC download page at http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc/download.htm

This is a test release, with the intention that users who have experienced
difficulties when running WinVNC under Windows 95 can try the patch out to
see if it alleviates the problem for them.

Windows 95/WinVNC users are encouraged to mail us to report whether or not
the patch works on their system.

Thanks,

Attempting a compile on bsdi 3.1.
First problem is an infinite loop creating the XIE subdir of XIE.
Let it create /XIE/XIE/XIE/XIE/XIE/XIE/XIE ... Stopped it and finally
got the 'make Makefiles' to go with much hand waving. God, I hate
imakefiles.
Next, seem to be missing some (X?) stuff :

shlicc2 -c -O2 -m486 -I. -I../include -I../../../X11
-I../../../lib/Xau -I/usr/X11R6/include -DCSRG_BASED -DSHAPE -DLBX
-DGCCUSESGAS -DSTATIC_COLOR -DAVOID_GLYPHBLT -DPIXPRIV -DXSERV_t
-DTRANS_SERVER -DTCPCONN -DUNIXCONN -DDDXOSINIT -DSERVER_LOCK
-DDDXTIME -DUSE_RGB_TXT -DXDMCP access.c
access.c:51: X11/Xtrans.h: No such file or directory
*** Error code 1

 I think the X that ships w/ bsdi is X11R6.1, do I need .3?

Also appear to be missing shapestr.h and a whole lotta cfb*.h stuff.

Would freebsd be a better choice? Maybe I should try running it in
the linux emulation mode of freebsd :-)

It looks to me like this is trying to rebuild the entire server,
including the hardware-dependant stuff. Maybe it's meant to be grafted
into the X source tree and compiled from there?

Several people have indicated that they have to use Windows occasionally =

under the desk from the Unix box.

Here's a suggestion: all other things being equal, I recommend using the =
Windows box to view the Unix machine rather than the other way around. =
This is chiefly because Windows generally works better as a client than =
as a server, and also because PC graphics cards are often better than =
those in Unix workstations. Remember, you can create a VNC session of =
any pixel depth you like. For my day-to-day work I use a Solaris 16-bit =
VNC session displayed on my PC. Few of our Sun machines have more than =
8-bit color hardware, but the PC has plenty of bits to spare.

If you're very anti-Windows you can make your VNC desktop the same size =
as the screen and set the taskbar to 'Auto hide' and just pretend you're =
on an X terminal, but pop up the Start menu when you have to use =
PowerPoint....

Just a thought....

Hello,
I'm joining the party late, so sorry if this has already been asked. I
prefer to display my PC on my SGI O2, because my O2 has a much larger/nicer
monitor, and besides e-mail/news, I don't really use my PC. I compiled
vncviewer under Irix 6.3, and it works fine. The PC and the SGI are on the
same network hub, so the ping time between them is < 1ms. When I display my
PC on the SGI, the response is ok, but not very fast. The update rate is
kinda pokey. I've got the server set to refresh under the mouse only - not
the full screen. Mouse tracking is pretty slow. Given the amount of
information, and that this is a stateless system, I'm not too surprised,
but is there anything I can do to speed things up? Oh, I'm running Win95,
and I've tried resolutions from 640x480 to 1024x768 at 8bit and highcolor.
Speed doesn't seem to change much.
Lest I sound too critical, this is *very* cool.

Not sure where the reports should go, so I'll send mine everywhere. :)

The test version does not fix the problem here. It stops updating after
two or three minutes. The server is running under Win95 OSR2 on a Pentium
233MMX / 64 meg. The client is running under Linux 2.0.33 / Xfree 3.3.1 on
a Pentium 200MMX / 80 meg.

The server under NT4 works fine.

BTW, many thanks for releasing this wonderfully useful package.

Hi,

I have unpacked the fonts, and run mkfontdir, but I still can't seem to
get the X-server up and running
I'm using RedHat5.0 with the latest updates, and jdk1.1.5.
If I issue 'vncserver' I get the following in X.log:

I'm experiencing the same problems. What are the proper permissions?

As much as I dislike Windows, I have to agree with you. Even Windows NT
is slowed down quite a bit by the act of serving the display.
Unix does not seem to notice it any more than any other X server.

It might be possible for someone to write a virtual video card driver
that does actually display anything, and combines the
windows VNC server code directly into the driver. It seems like that
would speed up things quite a bit.

If a speedier solution for serving windows could be made, than having a
Windows box tucked away would be very suitable and agreeable for me and
many people I know.

One big advantage of VNC over running an X-Server on a Windows PC is
this, if Windows crashes while running a X session with an X-Server, you
lose your session. If it crashes while running it with a VN C server,
you lose nothing.

My number one complaint so far is not being able to cleanly kill the
X-Session from the viewer client. (Apart from killing the VNC server
task
from within the X session)

Greetings all!

I'm trying to compile vnc on a Sparc LX running RedHat 4.2 linux. Things
go along swimmingly until the make gets to
/usr/src/vnc/Xvnc/lib/font/bitmap at which point the errors listed below
occur. As nearly as I can tell [hardly expert :(] the offending -m486 is
a CDeBugFlag, but if that is indeed the case, why would gcc think it's an
"invalid option"?=20

Any thoughts/ideas would be welcome

cheers

These are the things I noticed first, too, 30 minutes after
downloading :-)

The other thing is that if you have the "Auto hide" option
on the Windows Task bar, it can be a little tricky to bring it
up. (I know ... don't do auto-hide then :-) But perhaps some
edge resistance on the X window might help this.

Someone mentioned the dependance that VNC has on someone
logging on to (auto-) start the server. Well I s'spose you could
start it as an NT service so that you can run it all the time.
I have not done this before but it sounds like it is not too
hard to do. Anyone? You would have to fix (2) above to make
this work I guess.

Another thing I noticed is a cosmetic issue: the windows background
appears has a random colour and then is painted by black slowly with
each mouse move. Is this a consequence of colour-depth differences
between server and client?

BTW, I think it's awesome too.

I also had the same problem, but not realizing the problem of
the gz compressed fonts I cam up with another soultion.

First I started xfs (X font server) by typing

/usr/bin/X11/xfs -port 7100

I did this at root, but I am not sure that is necessary. There are
init files that start this up on my Debian system (Thought they
are not active).

Then in the vncserver script where you can add the -fp option to the
command line (Around line 129), I put

$cmd .= " -fp tcp/localhost:7100";

This seemed to fix things, and now I understand why. xfn I am sure
understands gziped fonts, and the Xvnc understands how to talk to the
font server.

Hope this helps anyone out there.

After the font problem last night, I really liked VNC. You guys
did a good job. And with the source being under the Gnu GPL, this
leave lots of opertunitys for other programers, such as myself
to improve and add features to it.

One Question.

I saw referenct your Teleporting system, which is under a much more
restrictive licens. Is there a reason that this is not also
under the GPL? Is there any possibility that it could be released
under the GPL at a later date.

The reason is that I am not much of a Windows/Microsoft Guy. All of
the work I do is under Unix/X. I would be very much interest in
using this software, and maybe extending it. The problem is that
I am not an educational instution (unless you count educating myself),
and I like to give my work away so that others can benifit from it
as I have benifited from previous work. (I use Linux exclusivally).

Just Wondering.

I get very similar error messages. I already tried gunzipping amd
mkfontdiring all my font directories, but it didn't work. Anyone find a
solution for this yet? OTOH, it fired up without a problem on a Dec Alpha
I have access too.

I thought the same thing myself when it happenned. It didn't make a
difference. This is on a NT4.0 box. Do you need administrator access to
install it?

VNC could be very useful in training classes where students can follow
on their screen what the instructor is doing. To allow this, the VNC
viewer should handle a -readonly option to disable mouse and key
events passing from the client. The changes are very small in the
viewer code.

I've made some performance tests with the server on NT 4.0 and the
client on UNIX. The mouse handling is too slow on our fast network. I
wonder what would happen over a modem... IMHO, the cursor should be
handled separately. The cursor image should not be part of the "screen
content" which is transmitted. The server should only send to the
client the definition of the cursor (pixmap + mask) and its
position. The VNC viewer should handle the cursor image, which is
trivial in UNIX/X.

Hi !

After the first successfull test on a local (linux) machine, I wonder if
I could use the viewer on a win-3.1 box that is connected to mine on a
plip (1mbit/s) link. Only, there is no viewer compiled for windows 3.1.
Is it possible to do this ? And if, could anyone make a binary available
somewhere ? I am too much a linux person, and don't have any windows
compilers (nor any experience in using them). And I really don't want to
upgrade the old machine to '95, it does what it is supposed to do, and I
don't want to touch it.

thanks

There are I think three problems Im seeing right now playing with VNC

1.	There is something eating CPU time and Im not yet sure why. I don't
know if the algorithms are being executed in a slow way or if its actually
down to computational difficulties.

2.	It seems a little too stateless. Put a fancy coloured background up
and move windows around. I suspect a server setup that "knows" what the
current client has seen can keep stateless over connections but increase
performance massively since the "previous" 2 states for a given tile (even
if you fix grid the previous state tiles) should include what you want
(consider a button - states will be down, up, and maybe over - the previous
tile cache would cover almost all gui element changes like that).

3.	The bandwidth needs - as noted by others. You can cut this a chunk
and add security by using the ssh tunneling facilities to run the protocol
over an encrypted ssh tunnel.

Other than that its remarkably stable

Thorsten -

It should be easy to write a Win 3.1 viewer. The current Win32 viewer is
multithreaded, which helps when it is connected to multiple servers at once,
so it would need to be cut down to a single-threaded version.

Tristan has a borrowed Win 3.1 machine at home and uses Java under IE4 to
dial into work; IE4 also gives you the dialup PPP which is normally missing
under 3.1. I think it's painfully slow, though...

I hope to put a list of suggested projects like this on the web server later
today, to see if anyone will volunteer to have a go. I don't have a
compiler that does 16-bit any more - Microsoft no longer support it.

The -m486 flag is an optimization flag when compiling Intel binaries. It tells the compiler to align stuff at four-byte boundaries.

That's why it doesn't work on SPARC compilations :-)

Remove it and you should be OK.

Hi,

I have vnc running now, but when I try to get it into netscape 4.04 for
linux. It starts up ok and asks for password, but then I get the following
in the java console:

netscape.security.AppletSecurityException: security.Couldn't connect to
'*host*' with origin from 'local-classpath-classes'.
# UniversalConnect privilege not enabled: Contacting and connecting with
other computers over a network

How do you enable this UniversalConnect privilege??

The Win32 version also hangs after a few minutes on my NT4.0SP3
machine. I don't know if it's relevant, but the Properties
dialog then uses the larger, Win3.x like style instead of the
smaller font it uses when VNCserver is started.

I had a similar problem. There are two lines in 'vncserver' that I
uncommented and modified to point to my 'font' & 'rgb' subdirectories.
Open 'vncserver' and search for the word 'font'. You should see the two
lines I'm referring to.

I also made sure the VNC files are owned by 'root'. I'm not sure if
that's necessary or not, but I was basically trying everything I could
think of to get it working.

Hope that helps!

This looks to me like Xvnc is being built with the wrong imake configuration
stuff. When it builds correctly, Xvnc doesn't rely on the normal installed X
header files such as X11/Xtrans.h, it gets them from the Xvnc/include
directory. Did you create a suitable .cf file for your platform in
Xvnc/config and then run vncxmkmf, etc in the Xvnc directory?

Cheers

I had this problem yesterday - the problem was I had included some font
directories that should not be there; in my case the PEX directories.
Only font directories with fonts.dir inside them should be used. The PEX
directory has no .pcf files in it so mkfontdir dosn't help. (It took
strace to help me with this one ;)

I, too, am having trouble compiling Xvnc. But before I invest too
much time in it, I want to be sure of something. Does it work the way
the Windows95 version works? That is, can I work at my workstation,
and then go elsewhere and still "be at my workstation"? From the
docs, it looks like my console will be running XFree86 and the remote
station will have to rely on Xvnc, which means that a program will
have to be connected to one or the other, but not both. Is this
right?

Thanks.

*** Relevant to WinVNC (Win32 VNC server) users running Windows 95 or
	Windows NT

We have now produced a second modified version (R6) of WinVNC which
removes completely the display of the remote pointer. In-house testing
suggests that this may fix the reliability problems seen particularly
under Windows 95.

We would be grateful if users who have experienced problems could try this
new version and give us feedback.

VNC is >very< cool. I just installed the server on a win95 machine,
and the viewer on an X workstation. It works! But I keep doing
something that stops the screen updates on the X side. What's going
wrong?

Everything I type and do from the X terminal is reflected on the
screen on the real Win95 machine, but not vice versa. It's as though
the normally two-way VNC has become one way?

I believe I have the "test" Win95 version, but I installed it over the
original one, and I can't see how I can confirm that the "test"
version is in place. (A different version number would have been
nice....)

Thanks for any help.

I've updated the 'test' version to try a different patch for this problem,
which is with the Win32 server. The new test version is 3.3.1 R6. It
doesn't render the mouse cursor at all now, which seems to fix the
problem on our Windows 95 boxes.

The new test version is available from the VNC web page at
http://www.orl.co.uk/vnc. You can check what version of WinVNC you are
running by selecting the About WinVNC menu item from the WinVNC tray menu.
It should claim to be 3.3.1 R6, otherwise you are running an effectively
un-patched version.

Is this the "test" version from the web site? I did install that,
over the older one, but it still says "R5"? Where does one get R6?

The original test version (version 3.3.1 R5) has been shwon not to fix the
Win95 problem. The test version on the web page is now version 3.3.1 R6.
If you have a version of WinVNC that claims to be "R5" and you are
experiencing difficulties with it, we suggest that you try out "R6" from
the VNC web page.

Tried that, but things break later. I'm trying at the moment to figure
out how to modify the linux.cf or sun.cf files to allow for either SunOS
4.1.* or linux on sun architecture. So far I'm just managing to confuse
myself...

Thanks for the idea

To prevent confusion between versions, and so that people actually know
what version they're downloading, how about including the version number
in the download like most Unix distributions. This could save a lot of
confusion. Also posting the version number next to the download button
would be nice, too.

Thanks for the tip. I finally got vncserver running on my Linux 2.0.33
box after very carefully changing the font and rgb paths in the startup
script. My advise to to start the minimum fonts (75dpi and misc) and
then add more as you wish/desire. Here is the relevant section of my
vncserver file:

$cmd .= " -fp /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/X11R6/lib/fonts/misc/";
$cmd .= " -co /var/X11R6/lib/rgb";

For those of you still having problems with the linux version, make sure
that you include the REAL paths, and not symlinks. This seemed to help
clear things up for reasons still unknown. Note that the path for rgb is
in /var, nor in /usr on my system.

I got vncserver installed on another NT 4.0 box, without administrator
privaledges. There was something weird with the NT machine I was
originally attempting to install vncserver on. Very strange indeed. I
assume that there is something non-standard with the NT4.0 machine that I
was trying to install it on.

I just tried R6. At first glance it looks better, but it still caused
the following message (which I could only see from the Win95 machine):

An Exception 0E has occurred at 0028:C1013E38 in VxD MSTCP(01) +
00008FB4. This was called from 0028:C0FFCC9A; in VxD VTDI(01) +
000000BA. It may be possible to continue normally. [...]

(I added the elipses.) So far, I have been able to conintue normally,
but I had to go to the Win95 machine to "press any key" to continue.

Normally, yes, we will do this - the current version is 3.3.1, and all the
packages are labelled with that. Major changes will involve a new version
number, and we may use the R6 release convention for platform-specific
changes. We haven't quite finalised that yet, but for the moment, I have put
the R6 version number on the download page beside the button.

Another improvement in R6 that Wez didn't mention is an extra check-box on
the Properties page which causes all new incoming connections to be
'read-only' - they can view the screen but not move the cursor or type
characters. A few people had mentioned the scenario of a teacher with
several (possibly mischievous) pupils, so we thought this might be handy.

  Hi there.. great software there..

compiling on HPUX 9.05 with both gcc and hp's cc

had to copy hp.cf etc from /usr/lib/X11Rx/config to ./Xvnc/config,
  (am using X11R5)

  edited the Imake.tmpl to have:
     #define XCOMM #
at the start, cause make didn't like it (either gnumake or hp's make)

created a directory in Xserver called PEX5, since make gave out about it.
had a Imakefile (empty) in that directpry to keep make happy for the
  time being.

files changed (giving a patch seemsd an overkill)

        vncviewer/x.c: usleep(delay * 1000); to sleep(delay)
	 (don't have usleep)
	libvncauth/vncauth.c:
	  changed [s]random to [s]rand

  good, not much to change.

  now make world

make bombs out when trying to 'making all in ./programs/Xserver...'

complains about no rule to make 'all', yup then generated makefile
  has no rule...
have tried gnu make etc, nowt works.

any ideas ? (don't say edit that Imakefile ;)

Hi everyone,

I just downloaded windows version of VNC just to see what it does. I must
say it's quite amazing, although still quite slow. The client version is
