It's a fundamental part of our business at WorkSpot. We offer a Linux-based desktop accessible through a browser or native VNC client. WorkSpot is hosting a session on "The Future of VNC (Virtual Network Computing)" Wednesday, July 19, 2000 4:15 pm to 5:30 pm and a BOF (Birds of a Feather, informal discussion also focused on VNC) Wednesday, July 19, 2000 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm refreshments will be served VNC Session Abstract: Virtual Network Computing [VNC] enables an economical and effective client-server capability within a Linux environment. Given this, VNC holds much promise for extending the value of Linux to a broader set of users across a wide range of markets. This session is intended to increase the visibility of VNC within the Linux open source community, acknowledge the contributions made to date, discuss the current limitations, and build support for turning VNC into an extensible, robust delivery vehicle. Our speakers are: James Weatherall AT&T Labs, Cambridge UK: James joined Olivetti & Oracle Research Labs in Cambridge immediately after graduating in 1997. He spent a pre-doctorate year working on WinVNC, the VNC server for Win32, and on experimental lightweight VNC servers for embedded household devices. (The Olivetti & Oracle Research Labs were purchased by AT&T in 1998, to become AT&T Labs Cambridge.) Adam J. Richter President Yggdrasil Computing, Inc. In the late 80's and early 90's Adam Richter made his living porting and enhancing the X window system for a number of companies throughout Silicon Valley. In 1992, Mr. Richter formed Yggdrasil Computing, the company that founded the Linux CDROM industry. Adam believes that VNC has tremendous potential for enabling much thinner computing interfaces and has worked to forge industry alliances between Yggdrasil and a number of other companies to make that a reality. Mr. Richter has a BA in computer science from the University of California, Berkeley. We hope to see you there! It worked quite well, although you had to do nasty command line stuff,- on a psion that doesn't have a command line by default. So, I have added two fields; one for the host and the other for the port. I've also added a help screen that tells you how to move the screen around - i.e the psion screen behaves like a window on the larger VNC screen. The whole thing is packaged as an SIS file, and can be downloaded from: http://www.imhotek.com in the downloads section, at the bottom The reason I have taken so long it that I've only just got around to rebuilding the SIS file using a proper psion UID number! I will be changing the host/port display to make this a combo box, that saves previous servers, at some point. For more details please see the VNC web pages at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc , in particular http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/xvnchistory.html vncconnect New helper program for Xvnc, which causes it to make reverse connections to a listening VNC viewer. This is similar to WinVNC's "Add New Client" / -connect feature. Xvnc New option -inetd incorporating Andre Moreira's iXvnc functionality. Fix to hextile encoding, thanks to Michael A. Fetterman - this may be the cause of the "0 bpp problem". New connect out feature by using the vncconnect command. Fix some non-ascii capitalisation issues, thanks to Vlad Harchev. PuTTY and pscp are included to allow secure (text based) terminal emulation and file transfer. The package is relatively light at 342K, (by Windows standards anyway). It comes "ready to go" -- it requires no installation and can be removed by deleting the extracted files, (though very security conscious users may also want to remove the VNC and PuTTY registry entries). People using xcutsel to copy/cut & paste between VNC and an X desktop might be interested with it. I was bored clicking on xcutsel's buttons to copy/paste between GTK apps on my VNC desktop and the Windows system running vncviewer. This tool regularly scans the primary selection and the cutbuffer 0. If one of them is changed, it updates the other one. I don't need xcutsel anymore and have a working cut and paste between GTK (through VNC) and Windows. There was an article about this in the Observer on Sunday: http://www.observer.co.uk/business/story/0,6903,687764,00.html Now for the good news - VNC lives on! First, the current version of VNC will continue to be available at the original web address, which will soon be re-hosted at Cambridge University where AT&T continues to sponsor research. The VNC mailing lists will also continue to be supported. Second, the creators of VNC are planning a venture to independently support and develop VNC as an ongoing open source project. You haven't heard much from us recently because we've been busy with other projects such as the Broadband Phone, but now that we have the opportunity :) we're back on the case. This is for announcements of new versions of VNC, successful ports to other platforms, availability of related software, and so forth. This is distinct from the standard list which is concerned more with bug reports, suggestions, questions etc. This list is 'moderated', which means that messages sent to it will only appear if we approve them, which we will generally do if they are appropriate for the list. It also means that your messages may take a while to appear if we're away or very busy! See http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html for details of how to subscribe and unsubscribe from this and the other lists. Archives and searching from the web should follow shortly. -- ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dr Quentin Stafford-Fraser AT&T Laboratories Cambridge http://www.uk.research.att.com/~qsf -------------------------------------------------------------------- The vnc-announce mailing list see http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- From owner-vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Fri Jun 11 17:01:34 1999 Envelope-to: vnc-announce-outgoing@uk.research.att.com Received: from majordom by shallot.uk.research.att.com with local (Exim 2.02 #3) id 10sThQ-0004bM-00 for vnc-announce-outgoing@uk.research.att.com; Fri, 11 Jun 1999 16:58:32 +0100 Received: from kirkstone ([158.124.64.106] helo=kirkstone.cam-orl.co.uk ident=tjr) by shallot.uk.research.att.com with esmtp (Exim 2.02 #3) id 10sThN-0004b7-00 for vnc-announce@orl.co.uk; Fri, 11 Jun 1999 16:58:29 +0100 Received: by kirkstone.cam-orl.co.uk (8.8.7//ident-1.0) id QAA24776; Fri, 11 Jun 1999 16:58:28 +0100 Received: from marrow ([158.124.64.61]) by shallot.uk.research.att.com with esmtp (Exim 2.02 #3) id 10sTfl-0004WM-00; Fri, 11 Jun 1999 16:56:49 +0100 Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 17:01:34 +0000 X-Original-Date: Fri, 11 Jun 1999 16:56:49 +0100 (BST) From: Charlie McLachlan X-Sender: cim@marrow To: vnc@uk.research.att.com, vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Subject: ANN: MacVNC Beta 2 Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Precedence: bulk AT&T Research Laboratories Cambridge are pleased to announce that the latest beta version of MacVNC is now available from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/download.html Changes in Server since Alpha 1.1 ------------------------------------ - All preferences can now be set via a control panel - Web interface vastly improved. I release new version (beta 0.09) of VNC viewer for OS/2 PM. This is new beta version (beta 0.09) of PM VNC viewer. I appended some requested features and fixed some problems. Fixes: VNC viewer saved window's size & position for next time, but if you moved window (not changing window size), it failed to save window position. Fixed to save position if window moved. If using VNC viewer with VGA 16 colors, BGR233, TINY, GRAY failed to startup. Due to failed to load 256 pallete on VGA 16 display. Now TINY, GRAY uses default 16 colors with 16 entry color pallet. For BGR233, VNC viewer checks avaiable colors. If enough colors avaiable (>=256), uses 256 entry pallet, and it works same as previous version. If there are not enough pallet, then VNC viewer maps BGR233 into default 16 colors, it works same as TINY color. New Features: Changed maximize operation. On previous versions, maximize brings window to remote desktop size. Now, if remote deskt size is greater than PM's dekstop size, remote desktop hold entire PM screen. If remote desktop have same size of PM, entire remote desktop appears on PM screen. Titlebar or system menu still exist in this state. So if you want to use local function, ATL-SPACE will bring systemu menu. Current VNC users are recommended to move to the new version. Full details of the changes in the latest version can be found at the VNC web site at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ There are many bug fixes and minor changes behind the scenes. Some of the more obvious changes from 3.3.2 are: Windows VNC viewer ------------------ Information about the current connection including, optionally, the password, can be saved to a '.vnc' file, which can then be specified on the command line. You can use the IniFileMapping facility of NT if you would prefer these to be saved in the registry. Also an option to register '.vnc' files as belonging to vncviewer, so that you can double-click on them. Fairly primitive scaling facility allows you to see desktop at different sizes. In Connection dialog, display defaults to :0 if not specified, so when connecting to WinVNC servers you can usually just type the machine name. WinVNC Server ------------- An 'Add New Client' option has been added to the server menu, which initiates a connection to a listening VNC viewer (one started with the -listen option). This allows you to send your desktop to a helpdesk, for example, without them needing to know your password. Limited client IP-address based filtering of connections is now supported, through the new Machine-Local registry setting "AuthHosts". Incoming connections may be restricted on a server-wide basis to being accepted only on the local-loopback interface, through the "LoopbackOnly" registry setting. ------------- VNC is Open Source software and is distributed under the GNU Public License. -- ---------------------------- Dr Quentin Stafford-Fraser AT&T Laboratories Cambridge http://www.uk.research.att.com/~qsf -------------------------------------------------------------------- The vnc-announce mailing list see http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/intouch.html --------------------------------------------------------------------- From owner-vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Mon Oct 04 10:54:31 1999 Envelope-to: vnc-announce-outgoing@uk.research.att.com Received: from majordom by shallot.uk.research.att.com with local (Exim 2.02 #3) id 11Y4Zx-0002fG-00 for vnc-announce-outgoing@uk.research.att.com; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 10:38:45 +0100 Received: from kirkstone ([158.124.64.106] helo=kirkstone.cam-orl.co.uk ident=tjr) by shallot.uk.research.att.com with esmtp (Exim 2.02 #3) id 11Y4Zw-0002fA-00 for vnc-announce@orl.co.uk; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 10:38:44 +0100 Received: by kirkstone.cam-orl.co.uk (8.8.7//ident-1.0) id KAA00870; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 10:38:43 +0100 Received: from sraigw.sra.co.jp ([202.32.10.2]) by shallot.uk.research.att.com with esmtp (Exim 2.02 #3) id 11XzEi-00078X-00 for vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 04:56:29 +0100 Received: from srashd.sra.co.jp (srashd [133.137.44.12]) by sraigw.sra.co.jp (8.8.7/3.7W-sraigw) with ESMTP id MAA09280 for ; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 12:56:25 +0900 (JST) Received: (from akira@localhost) by srashd.sra.co.jp (8.8.7/3.6Wbeta7-srambox) id MAA20636 for vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com; Mon, 4 Oct 1999 12:56:23 +0900 (JST) Message-Id: <199910040356.MAA20636@srashd.sra.co.jp> From: akira@sra.co.jp (Akira Hatakeyama) Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 10:54:31 +0000 X-Original-Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 12:56:23 +0900 X-Mailer: Mail User's Shell (7.2.6 beta(5) 10/07/98) To: vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Subject: VNC viewer for OS/2 PM, offical version Sender: owner-vnc-announce@uk.research.att.com Precedence: bulk Greetings from Yokohama, Japan. Version 3.3.3R2 includes a few bug fixes and one or two new features over 3.3.3R1. Anybody still using 3.3.2 is definitely advised to upgrade. Perhaps the most important changes are: * WinVNC can now take a -connect option, which tells a running VNC server to initiate an outgoing connection to a listening viewer. * A bug in the viewer which made it unreliable on SMP machines has been fixed. VNC can be downloaded from http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/ Information on the changes in this version can be found at http://www.uk.research.att.com/vnc/winhistory.html We recommend that you stop and uninstall any running VNC software before installing the new version, otherwise certain files may not be successfully replaced. I'm proud to tell you that we have build a "hardware VNC server" called Praesidio 1010. What is it? It is an embedded PC with a framegrabber card inside and a card for emulating keyboard and mouse. All this parts were developed by us and it takes a long time to do this. That was the reason why we used the VNC protocol for our remote control. So we have not to develop any client software. Thanks to the VNC community! We also make use of the tight-extension (for slow modem connections). What can you do with it? You can connect it to any PC via VGA- and PS/2 cables and than you can remote control this PC without installing additional software. You can also use the PC local, because you can connect keyboard and mouse directly in our Praesidio. You can also remote watch your oscilloskope if it has a VGA connector. You can connect it as keyboard, mouse to a KVM-system and you can than control any PC. You can do many other things too. If you want, have a look at https://62.157.169.247 user: admin password: admin Than choose "remote" and start the Java-VNC-applet. Or use your VNC-Client directly and connect to 62.157.169.247 If you have more questions about it please feel free to contact info@infratec-plus.de Best regards, infratec plus From general@eepatents.com Wed Jun 19 20:57:32 2002 Received: from mailnw.centurytel.net (mailnw.centurytel.net [209.206.160.237]) by raq2100.uk2net.com (8.10.2/8.10.2) with ESMTP id g5JJvVx09849 for ; Wed, 19 Jun 2002 20:57:31 +0100 Received: from eepatents.com (pppoe0651.gh.centurytel.net [209.206.248.180]) by mailnw.centurytel.net (8.12.2/8.12.2) with ESMTP id g5JJvJhh028026 for ; Wed, 19 Jun 2002 12:57:24 -0700 (PDT) Message-ID: <3D10E27A.9070308@eepatents.com> From: Ed Suominen User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: VNC-Announce@realvnc.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Subject: [VNC-Announce] VNC connections made automatic, secure & firewall-friendly with PRIVARIA Sender: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com Errors-To: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com X-BeenThere: vnc-announce@realvnc.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: The VNC Announcements List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Date: Fri Jun 21 17:40:03 2002 X-Original-Date: Wed, 19 Jun 2002 12:58:50 -0700 The PRIVARIA Secure Networking Suite comprises a collection of open-source networking applications (including TightVNC 1.2.4) and a powerful connection manager with a simple user interface. I have written a small VNC server, suitable for use in small networked 8-bit microcontrollers and systems of similar magnitude. The server is called "uVNC" (micro VNC) and more information and source code can be found at: http://www.sics.se/~adam/uvnc/ Please note that the software is not really meant for actual use; the main reason for making this was to see if it would be possible to get reasonable performance from VNC over TCP/IP even in small embedded systems. VNC might be a nice way to interact with small embedded devices in situations where HTTP/HTML is too static. There is a publicly avaliable on-line demo of uVNC running on a Commodore 64 (64k RAM, 1 MHz 6510 CPU, 10 Mbit Ethernet hardware): http://tfe.c64.org/ The server has two different demos - one with four moving graphs showing the network load and one with an editable C64 screen. /adam -- Adam Dunkels http://www.sics.se/~adam From vncproject@yahoo.com Wed Jul 10 14:28:11 2002 Received: from web13001.mail.yahoo.com (web13001.mail.yahoo.com [216.136.174.11]) by raq2100.uk2net.com (8.10.2/8.10.2) with SMTP id g6ADSAT25276 for ; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 14:28:10 +0100 Message-ID: <20020710132812.89450.qmail@web13001.mail.yahoo.com> Received: from [204.151.97.178] by web13001.mail.yahoo.com via HTTP; Wed, 10 Jul 2002 06:28:12 PDT From: Steven Mitchell To: vnc-announce@realvnc.com MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="0-248728609-1026307692=:85597" Subject: [VNC-Announce] VNC NTLM Sender: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com Errors-To: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com X-BeenThere: vnc-announce@realvnc.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: The VNC Announcements List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Date: Wed Jul 10 16:14:02 2002 X-Original-Date: Wed, 10 Jul 2002 06:28:12 -0700 (PDT) --0-248728609-1026307692=:85597 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Hello all, I have seen several requests on wish lists for NT Authentication for VNC. It is now in version 1.0, fully supporting JDK 1.4, and clean of most bugs. Use VNCj to create powerful VNC _application servers_ (as opposed to desktop servers, the more common use of VNC) very quickly using standard Java GUI (Swing and AWT) and graphics libraries. And extensions that are based on these standards (such as 3D and GIS) should also work. It's an good way to distribute a complex service right now without requiring users to install clients. It is a strong platform for developing management modules for software/hardware devices, especially those for which HTML just won't do. And if your network already is using a lot of VNC, it's a good way to create services on-the-fly. VNCj supports all the standard encodings and shared sessions. This is designed to allow a server to host a large number of VNC sessions (currently configured for 100) while not requiring each user to have an assigned display number to avoid contention. As each user connects to the mux, a new VNC server is started in a clean environment. This means that each time you start a session you get the same desktop with the same preferences. HttpTunnel4vnc provides tunneling of VNC-sessions through HTTP. An extraction of the main page: * Our main goal was to provide a solution that works with a wide range of firewalls and proxies and requires minimal fuss on the client side. * HttpTunnel4vnc requires no signed applets, no reconfiguration of firewalls; proxy settings of browsers are used transparently. * HttpTunnel4vnc uses only vanilla HTTP GET and PUT requests (no fancy CONNECTs), this should work even with the dumbest browsers. * Tunneling introduces quite a bit of overhead: but performance is still very acceptable. * HttpTunnel4vnc supports persistent (keep-alive) connections and HTTP pipelining. Unfortunately, few browsers, and even fewer proxies, take advantage of these features. * HttpTunnel4vnc can be configured to work transparently behind Apache. This way, you can use the all import port 80 for VNC and other applications. Thus HttpTunnel4vnc can also be configured to provide virtual multi-session support (multiple VNC servers on port 80 are possible). For details see: http://www.online-marketwatch.com/HttpTunnel4vnc/ Kind regards :) The HttpTunnel4vnc Team ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ HttpTunnel4vnc ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ From ach@realvnc.com Thu Mar 6 11:28:49 2003 Received: from brainstorm (localhost.localdomain [127.0.0.1]) by realvnc.com (8.11.6/8.11.6) with SMTP id h26BSn611844 for ; Thu, 6 Mar 2003 11:28:49 GMT Message-ID: <023201c2e3d2$adefb3c0$6f62a981@lcew2k.eng.cam.ac.uk> From: "Andy Harter" To: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106 Subject: [VNC-Announce] VNC 3.3.7 released Sender: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com Errors-To: vnc-announce-admin@realvnc.com X-BeenThere: vnc-announce@realvnc.com X-Mailman-Version: 2.0.11 Precedence: bulk List-Help: List-Post: List-Subscribe: , List-Id: The VNC Announcements List List-Unsubscribe: , List-Archive: Date: Thu Mar 6 13:40:01 2003 X-Original-Date: Thu, 6 Mar 2003 11:22:31 -0000 RealVNC is pleased to announce the release of version 3.3.7 of VNC.
